For my Dad

Lately I've thought a lot of my father. This week he underwent surgery and I'm happy to say it went great. This post is a quick one to honor the man who made me who I am today.

My dad is the most amazing man I know, he has led his family through many a move, happy times, hard times and plenty of awkward moments yet through the laughter and occasional tears he always strove to lead like Christ. He is a consistent encourager to all and as he likes to say "I'll always be your biggest cheerleader in life." He is always the first offer assistance in any situation save one time that comes to mind.

As a 6 year old boy in Texas Sundays were spent at 2 church services 1st the Lord's and 2nd Jerry Jones'. Halftimes were spent throwing the pigskin around emulating Troy Aikmen, Emmitt Smith or this fateful day I wanted to be #88 Michael Irvin and pops was Aikmen. What better duo was there? After a few minutes Dad sent a heater my way it promptly met my impeccable form with a snap of my middle finger. I wept and wailed as I'm sure Irvin would have. He came to my solace with the most encouraging words I can recall, "it's not broken, stop crying! You should try catching it in the bread basket next time!" I had a crooked finger for many years later after my broken finger set crooked. Thanks dad!

My dad taught me many great lessons and often it wasn't what he said that I learned from it was watching and observing. I learned as much in his failures as I did in his successes. He is a master of taking life's failures and working hard to learn and grow from them and that really sticks with me.

As a husband he treated my mother with love and respect and always valued their time away from the kids and taught me that you should never stop dating the one you love. I'm sure Kelli will be thankful for this gem :)

I could go on and on about how him but I think I'll leave it at this; Dad, thank you so much for being the man I needed and still need to observe and learn from and thanks for playing catch all those Sundays! I love you!

P.S. Thanks for your wicked good looks

Spring Cleaning

I've done some spring cleaning and even my blog got a facelift. I'm having some issues with text colors and fonts so bear with me.

To make your trip here worth your time I'll give you a website to bookmark and check everyday. He's an amazing photographer who posts 1 picture everyday from his life. I've been on this site everyday for almost 4 years now and always love his work, I hope you do too!

A tale of my journey

"To be nobody but yourself, in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight; and never stop fighting."
        e.e. Cummings

You've caught me, I haven't posted here in a long time but for good reason. I have been on a quest, a pursuit and perhaps the greatest adventure of my life. I've come here many a times crafting witty descriptive animated tales of my story but it was until i read this quote from Cummings that I knew what to post.

When I embark upon an adventure it is a quest worthy of my energy. Perhaps it awakens some boyish sense of adventure, maybe it challenges me to my core, it certainly make me smile, and at the end it is always a good choice. This adventure did all of these things and more!

Feb 19 2011 marked the culmination of my great quest, I asked my best friend Kelli Maks to be my wife, and this is my tale.

January 3rd I sit in my car driving alone with my thoughts, one in particular which had long since been a thought for some reason smacked me in the face as reality. I wanted to marry Kelli. I rushed home for lunch to check my finances which I'd been saving for pretty much my whole life. The light bulb went on, I had it, I had enough finally and I was ready. After lunch I had my phone ready to dial my friend and mentor Wally Anderson who just so happens to be one of the best custom jewelers around. I froze up like a 10 year old Dell.

The next day I gathered my nerves outside of the Whole Foods in Bend and made the call. After a quick catch up I told him why I was calling and he was excited but told me he was out of town for 10 days. We spent those days e-mailing design ideas and beginning to narrow down my designs. When he returned I drove to Eugene to meet him and finalize the plan. What we came up with was better than I ever could have hoped for. We took my old ring in Platinum and modified it to form the base of what was to be Kelli's ring.

It went from this

To This!

The process to design and make the ring took from January 4th to February 18th. The time between was spent lying to Kelli and doing my best to throw her off course. I thought I was so smart, she had bought me a weekend in Bend for my birthday that wasn't until Feb 19 so I had that date set as my target since the "special day" was chosen by her.

The morning of comes and I knew I was nervous when we got in the car to leave and Kelli asked if I wanted some breakfast and I wasn't hungry. I thought oh jeeze no appetite, hold on man it's going to be a wild ride! Our drive to bend is about 122 miles over the cascade mountain range, 2/3 of the way there I had set my sights on a small tributary of Suttle lake for the spot. Kelli knew I wanted to snowshoe on the way but I hadn't told her where. as we pulled of the blustery mountain pass she was excited and nervous about her first time snowshoeing. Luckily she was with me who had been snowshoeing his whole life... not!

It took us some time to find the ridge line trail and I distinctly remember thinking to myself. "Damn it I am not proposing in a parking lot, and I sure as hell aint asking some schmuck for directions!(not that there was anyone around)" I was a little stressed inside and cool as a cucumber outside (or so I thought). after a few more minutes some man appeared to inform us that we were trespassing, my magical day was getting better, I asked for directions and he gave us some obscure excuse for help. We finally found it what felt like 4 days later and started in through 3 ft of fresh powder! After a while we found a great spot overlooking the lake and mountains and I made what turned out to be the biggest mistake of the day. You see I am not a planner per-say so I didn't write up some grandiose speech or hang the ring from the antler of an albino virgin deer but rather had some thoughts on what I wanted to say and figured that was good enough. We were enjoying the view and hugging and I started into my "thoughts" after I said them I dropped down on a knee and asked her. She said yes, we took 1.7 million photos and continued on with our day. what I later learned while asking if I did ok was "you didn't ever say anything, you usually are so wordy I'm surprised you didn't have a speech."

"I did have a speech"

"No you didn't"

"Yeah! Remember 'I've had a lot of best friends but none compare to you...'"

"oh that was your speech... oh that was so sweet!"

Single men pay attention! Say your "speech" while you are on your knee lest it be confused for not a speech!

The rest of the weekend was amazing as was that moment. We had so much fun and she really did appreciate my "speech" and the entire ordeal. We shared many a laugh and memory with great friends and did what we do best enjoy our time no matter what we are doing.

Earlier I said it was Cummings' words that inspired this post and here's why. I am always in a fight to be me and stay true to what makes me who I am. What I found in Kelli is that she has freed me to be exactly who I am. Her support and love has given me the strength to be more than I could ever be without her and I am so proud to call her my fiancé. My fight for life and individualism is greater with her at my side and I am so blessed to have her and so thankful for her love!

Jerry Allen an Oregon legend

Take a minute to watch and listen to how special this year is for Ducks. Listening to Jerry Allen's call for so long as a stable guidepost to our beloved sports teams is as good as it gets, so a choked up finally to this regular season sums up what this means to Ducks everywhere. So proud to be a Duck and happy doesn't even begin to describe me right now.

All about the Benjie's

Well it sure has been a long time since I've written here!  Life's been crazy busy and a hiatus seems reasonable.  But here I am back again, sorry for the lapse.  Don't forget to check out my other blog on Tumblr for smaller quick blurps, as well as a feed from this site.

Well how do I summarize the last few months... "flow like water" comes to mind.  In late July Kelli and I headed north to try out a life in Portland.  We both got places downtown and we are just a short walk away.  I overlook PGE Park home to the MLS Timbers and this was the last baseball season for the Portland beavers.  I moved up with a Job repairing fiberglass on Yachts and to keep this post as positive as possible I'll just say this, that job was worse than stubbing your toe! The Lord provided a way out through a lay-off 3 weeks later and this was one of the best and most difficult things I've gone through.  I needed to be out of that job and had already been looking around for new work but after a move and a month without work it put me in the worst financial situation I've faced.

During this whole time Kelli had moved up without a job and was beyond diligent in searching.  After over a month of interviews for a receptionist position with a commercial realty firm she got the call that they were not interested in hiring her for that position, instead had created a new position for her as a brokers assistant that could propel her towards a position as a broker if she was interested.  Lets just say this is a great fit for her and a real blessing! She even has a parking space in a garage downtown! She got  the word on the 10th and had a start date yesterday the 20th.

In the mean time I had applied for a position with the Pelican Pub and Brewery on the Oregon coast in Pacific City for a Sales and delivery position.  I went through 3 interviews and really didn't know how it would turn out.  Then last week I got called in the morning for an interview at 3:30 with a 2:15 drive I was rushed.  It went great, I was with the principal owner and the communications director and they told me they had one more interview the next day and I would know the day after that.  I got called first thing that morning with the offer! What's better, my start date yesterday the 20th the same as Kelli's !  God sure is in control and I can't believe I live downtown Portland, work for a company I've loved for 4 years, Kelli's employed, we found a great church we love, and then top it all off, the Ducks are #5 in the country and Kasey's Spartans (25) beat Notre Dame!!!!

Dang that's really clear...

The last few weekends have been uncharacteristic for Kelli and myself, we've actually stayed in town and done normal people things like BBQ's, walks, movies, and general frivolities.  We did however go to the NCAA track championships last week which was so much fun! There were some big disappointments but overall it was a blast, we saw some amazing athletes and were part of a record setting crowd.  Sunday came around and we decided to head out on an adventure since we hadn't left Eugene in at least a week :)  Kelli planned out the location and we just rolled with the details.  We drove east on 126 to Clear Lake and enjoyed the beauty of the NW on our way.  It seems everywhere we adventure we are more and more impressed with the beauty of God's creation and how lucky we are to live in Oregon! We really are Oregonians who love and take advantage of the world around us.

Once we got to the lake we checked out the trail head and decided where to go.  We decided to head to the west end first and circle the lake.  It was a 5 mile hike/walk it was really simple and we both were a bit disappointed with the difficulty but it sure was pretty.  The north end is a lava bed and all around you get great views of the lake, as well as the McKenzie head waters and the trout creek feed.  After the hike it was off to Ike's Pizza across from Leaburg Lake.  We had our fill of BBQ chicken pizza and Artichoke pizza and headed home for the night. It was just a quick trip for us only 7 hours :)  Enjoy a few of the pics from our day.
